What is fetal medicine?

Fetal medicine is a medical speciality that focuses on the health and growth of unborn babies in the womb. Fetal medicine is a branch of medicine dealing with screening, diagnosing, and treating health issues of the fetus—the unborn patient.

Who is a fetal medicine specialist?

A fetal medicine specialist is a “physician of the fetus” who super-specializes after post-graduation in radiology or obstetrics. We specialize in understanding the unborn and predicting and recognizing the problems that you or your baby may have during pregnancy with the help of ultrasound scans and various other tests.

In the majority, we confirm the normalcy of the fetus. Once a problem is found with the fetus/fetal wellbeing we will counsel you in detail in very simple language to make you understand the problem and also discuss various management options with you, and intervene wherever necessary.

We work in close coordination with the managing obstetricians and screen all the pregnancies for abnormalities or complications –this is known as Perinatology.

We also work closely with Neonatologists / Pediatricians, or Pediatric surgeons for counseling and in the management of certain abnormalities of the unborn baby.

The ultimate goal is to give the expectant couple an in-depth, clear, simplified, descriptive, and extremely memorable pregnancy imaging experience.
